Councillor must upgrade knowledge

Councillors should constantly upgrade their knowledge on state affairs and issues to better assist the government in its socio-economic development efforts.

Assistant Housing Minister, Dr Soon Choon Teck, said this was because councillors were part of the third tier of government closest to the people.

And while councillors are required to help councils to formulate policies and strategies, he said they must also assist in disseminating information on government policies and plans.

"It is imperative that you enhance your knowledge to better perform your duties and serve the people," he said when representing Environment and Public Health Minister, Datuk Michael Manyin Jawong, at a dinner to mark the closing of "Councillors' Seminar 2005" last Wednesday night.

On a proposal to increase the councillors' allowances, Soon said he was all for it.

"Their allowances should be reviewed as what they do as councillors can involve expenses (our of their own pocket). But at the same time, they must show commitment to help in looking after the overall welfare of the people."

He also called for more awareness campaigns including those on cleanliness to be launched or organised by the local authorities.
