Sarikei District Council was established on the 1st January 1955 under the Local Authority Ordinance. The council is headed by a chairman and deputy chairman. The secretary of the council heads six (6) sections under the council.
Sarikei District Council is represented by 26 councillors including the Chairman and Deputy Chairman. All councillors are officially appointed by the Sarawak State TYT to upheld all responsibilities and tasks.
Sarikei District Council's 76 staffs works well under the Secretary and Deputy Secretary. Together, Sarikei District Council has undergone changes and massive development, which includes the latest development project of Sebangkoi Forest Park (Taman Rimba Sebangkoi) as well as the launch of Sarikei's own development VCD titled "Sarikei: Working Together Works" .
It is estimated that the population under the governance of Sarikei District Council is totaled at around 50,000 people. The statistic is based on the 1991 statistic collection. Among all the areas under the Council's jurisdiction, the Sarikei town is the most populated area and the population is expected to increase with the completion of the route connecting it to other areas, including Tanjung Manis Industrial Sector.
